I'm really set on the idea of a travel or airplanes. I know you're shocked-- complete shock that this would be my idea. :)
So I've been checking out other blogs and getting ideas and I wanted to run them past my numerous blog followers- all 10 of you!!
Things to consider- The room he will be moving to is currently the spare room. The accent wall is orange, which would work for one of these designs. However, I'm leaning towards red...or dark blue. More towards red because Brian and I's room is light blue and I have this issue with having two rooms of the same color. We need to purchase a dresser and a nightstand. We're also debating whether we can keep my desk in there or if it's not ok to have a joint "office/bedroom." One part of me says, "Jackson needs his own space!" and another part of me says, "He'll be two- he doesn't deserve his own space!" (I'm a mean mommy, I know).
Ok so here are some photos in my file.

The bed from Thrifty Decor Chick. The bedding is from Pottery Barn kids which is definitely out of our budget. But I love the navy blue with the board and batten. Unfortunately our walls are textured plaster, so board and batten could be a huge project
This room is from Too Much Time on My Hands. I love how she spelled out "FLY." I also love the clipboards and the airplane path which is made from black electrical tape! That's easy enough!
The walls are more neutral and I am a fan of the lamp and the reclaimed wood airplane hanging.
Our accent wall is already orange, so this boy room may be an easier do! I love how she spelled out, "SOAR." I also like the color palate of orange, black, gray and white. It's more of a minimalist approach, but maybe it's too modern for our house?
Do you think he will grow out of this too quickly? When I was little my parents put up wallpaper border in my room that said, "What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and all things nice." Yeah, that had to go when I got to 3rd grade and friends starting ripping on me for it! Haha.
What do you think? Do you like themed bedrooms? What do you think of the airplane/travel theme?

I think my best advice would be to think of how each item could be tranformed into the next stages of his room (when a "themed room" is no longer "cool"). For instance, that lamp would fit easily anywhere just by changing the shade. A reclaimed wooden headboard, that could be transitioned nicely as well (if not in his room than perhaps as a table-top, photoboard, etc. in another room. If it can be transitioned, you can splurge a little more. If not, I'd save my money and only buy it if it was a steal (perhaps literally ;).
ReplyDeleteThe clipboards are really cute. I've seen that before and it looks nice (and easy to change)! I have a few matted photos hanging on my walls with skirt hangers. So simple, especially for a plaster wall or apt. where hanging larger photos can be challenging.
I love the travel idea! So much you can do with that w/o making it look like a "kids-only" zone. I know you have so many travel items that it would be pretty easy to do the look on a budget.
You mention Pottery Barn... have you looked at the Pottery Barn Outlet in Jeffersonville? They have a large kids section. I'll admit, it's still pretty expensive but you can sometimes find a good deal.
BTW I creep your blog regularly and love your projects!
