The Value of (Human) Life

If you're anywhere near Ohio (or facebook), you've heard about the saga with the exotic animals outside of Zanesville.  Unfortunately, almost 50 animals were killed because they were on the loose and a threat to the public.

The firestorm surrounding this news today has come with a lot of criticism for the Muskingum Co Sheriff and also Jack Hanna.  People feel that the animals should have been tranquilized instead of being killed.  While it is sad to think of all the animals that were killed, and I even shed a tear for Jack Hanna during the news conference, when human life is in danger, it should always take precedence.

Tonight on facebook I was reading various comments on friends posts and also on the wall of Jack Hanna.  More than a handful of people said that they should have not worried about people because "I care for animals more than humans" or "the world is overpopulated anyhow."  One lady said she couldn't sleep last night because of the tragedy!  This is insane!!  My first thought was, "How do you value a tiger more than a child?"  But then it went to, "What if it was YOUR mother or YOUR child in harm's way, then how would you feel about that tiger?"  Or "Ok, so if that tiger was ready to bite your head off, and I'm holding a gun, you're going to tell me NOT to shoot it because you value that tiger?"  Hmmm....

I really shouldn't be surprised.  Most of these same people that support animal rights (and I'm saying "most" not "all") have little regard for human life. You know why?  Because they will do anything to protect an animal but they could care less about the millions of babies that are aborted in our nation every year.  They will sit through Sarah McLachlan's commercial for the Humane Society and shed a tear, but they will in no way worry about the hungry, abused, neglected children all over our world (and in our backyards).

You know what else I want to say to these people that say they like animals more than humans or remarking about what a tragedy it is??

Obviously you haven't seen enough tragedy in your life...

Let me tell you what REAL tragedy is.

It's the father of four that is 37 and is fighting cancer right now as we speak.
It's the father of two gorgeous girls who lost his battle to cancer at 42.

And on a personal level, it's Friday.  Friday, October 21, 2012.  One year since my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer.  He's been gone for over 6 months.  He was 52.  And some days (like today) I'm mad as can be that he's not getting to see all the funny things that Jackson is doing and he's not going to be there for his first baseball game or his first bicycle ride.

So to you people that think that losing these animals is such a tragedy, look around.  Look at real life.  Look at the people that are hurting and ill and broken and frustrated all around you.  We as humans have the potential to leave a great legacy.  The animals do not.
