Yesterday was the 18-month anniversary of Dale's passing. I've been reflecting a lot this week about what it means for our family, and after all of last night's mudslinging (myself included), I felt burdened to share. As Dale was dying, it didn't matter who was President, whether the Buckeyes were winning, or what the weather was doing. As the cancer was consuming his earthly body, all that mattered was the relationship he had with Jesus, and the relationships with his family. A few days ago, Jackson could no longer recognize "Pappy" in the picture we have sitting out. All he will ever know of Dale are the stories we tell.
I've heard it said before- but think of your grandparents or great grandparents that died before you were born. If you didn't have a picture, do you know how much they weighed? How their house was decorated? What car they drove? Probably not. Simply because those things don't matter. We spend so much time wrapped up in the things of this world that have no eternal purpose. (Mark 4:19) What do you want your legacy to be? What do you want your children and grandchildren to say about you? And most important, where do you want to spend eternity? This sinner has a long way to go, but I want to invest in the stuff that really matters. I want to have less "work" and more worship, less self and more servanthood, less stuff and more heavenly rewards. What's your legacy?
